BSG Kodak Moments

Following up with my previous post with contributions from the papparazzi!

Unfortunately, my camera battery crapped out after I took only a few photos at Pie & Beer, but happily Don Butler, one of my campmates that traveled up from Humboldt with our regular local crew, was kind enough to fill in for me & share his pics. A big shout out to Don & to his wife Edie for bringing him!

I put together a photo collage of some of the best of them for you. If you click on the hyperlinks in the caption, it will take you to the photo page for each one on Flickr.

Created with fd's Flickr Toys

Lots of spinning, lots of visiting, lots of PIE! I think there were at least 35 people there this year, & we had so much pie that I was able to contribute a few left over to the Saturday night potluck. And a big thanks to John & Carla for bringing the c-can of homemade root beer!

It wasn't all wheel spinning, either: I saw drop spindles, support spindles, & even a needle felter! Mostly it was visiting with new & old friends though, & I just wish I could have sat in on ALL the conversations!

For more photos of this year's gathering, check out my 2nd Annual Pie & Beer at BSG set on Flickr. Be sure to tag yourself if I didn't identify you, & feel free to leave a note for Don - I'll be passing on comments to him & thanking him for generously sharing his photos.

See you there next year!!!

Back from BSG with a HAUL!

I'm baaaaaack! Black Sheep Gathering is my fave fiber festival. Yep, it was BSG #3 for me, & if I'd had any more fun I probably would have been arrested!

I traveled up to Eugene with Janet Finch of Aunt Janet's Fiber Mill, just like last year, & had fun camping with the Humboldt crew that also included Janet Heppler of Nebo Rock Textiles and Ace Vandenack of Ace in the Hole Romney Ranch. Janet & I drove up a day early, arriving early Wednesday evening, which made the whole set-up portion of the weekend SO much more relaxing!

Friday night I hosted the inaugural COLORBOMBers Pie & Beer! meet-up, and we had quite a party. That is Heidi/Ruthshands spinning with me (I'm trying out the handmade wheel Amy bought, but I don't remember what kind it is); Heidi has a couple more pictures in this post on Ravelry. I had an epic fail in the photo department (if you took any at the party, let me know!), but there's a better pic of the group taken by Nancy/tigereye here. Needless to say, pie was eaten, beer was consumed, & the spinning was continuous! There were about 20 of us all told, & by the time the tequila was busted out, the joint was jumpin'.(Thanks for that, Morgaine!!). If you missed it, look for COLORBOMB Pie & Beer 2.0 at Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival in September.

I packed Saturday full of visiting, including getting to meet some of my stalkers online friends in person! This is Shelby/Heartstone of Spinning Awesome Good and Miki/Knitzphat modeling their handspun, handknit Faraway, So Close shawls that they made in the SAL/KAL that Shelby sponsored in her Ravelry group recently.

Besides schmoozing, I did a lot of shopping, trading, & (happily!) accepting gifts! Shelby brought me a lovely birthday batt, as did Susan/WildOnion. TrishKoppala brought me the roving I'd purchased recently in her Etsy shop, Rogue Adventures. I won a prize donated by Amy/toadyjoe in the BSG Bingo game organized by TheBon & Violin Jodie. Despite forgetting my own contribution, I was gifted a bunch of fiber in the Ravelry fiber swap that Carolina/mimosaknits put together. Someone at the COLORBOMBers meetup presented me with some retina-burn pink & purple roving left over from their class. And Ed Jenkins gave me a replacement shaft for my Jenkins Turkish Delight Spindle. But mostly there was lots of shopping! Wanna see? I know you do!

That's my dyed haul, comprised of:
  • 4oz Finn top in ‘Storm Warning’ & 4oz Wensleydale top in ‘Brilliance’ from Oregon Homestead Fibers
  • Sheep 2 Shoe Kit in ‘Slayer’ & Socks That Rock Lightweight Rare Gems from Blue Moon Fiber Arts
  • 4oz superwash BFL top in ‘Fun’ from Rogue Adventures
  • 3.1oz Spinning Awesome Good birthday batt from Heartstone
  • 1.5oz Happy V-Day birthday batt from WildOnion
  • 2oz Spunky Eclectic 60/40 merino/bamboo top in ‘Berry Pickin’ from BSG Bingo game, donated by toadyjoe
  • 1oz hot pink & 2oz purple/pink roving shared by a COLORBOMBer (can’t remember who that was dagnabit)
  • 2 4oz handmade felt pieces from Aunt Janet’s Fiber Mill
  • 1.25lb cone of salmon sparkle thread, 1/2lb cone of green sparkle thread, & 2 4oz cones of linen warp yarn in chartreause & orange from the estate sale booth
  • 8oz handdyed mohair top, 5oz handdyed Lincoln locks, & 2oz handdyed angora fluff from the Ravelry fiber swap
  • 2lb cone wool/poly yarn & 2.5lb cone of faux mohair yarn for plying from Linda’s booth

And that is my naturally-covered haul, which is:

Last of the haul is my Pacific Northwest IPA collection, left to right:

FireStation5 Steampumper, Ninkasi Tricerahops DIPA, Cascade Lakes IPA, Laughing Dog Devil Dog, LD Dogzilla Black IPA, LD Alpha Dog, Oakshire Watershed, & Terminal Gravity IPA

Some of the other highlights included:

  • Tried the drool-worthy electric mini-spinner in the Hansen Crafts booth and fell in LOVE - this might be in my future!!
I ended the weekend by driving home with Ace and his sheepies, & the trip just whizzed by because he is a great storyteller. (It doesn't hurt that he drives like I do; he took 2.5 hours off the time it took Janet & I on the way up!)

So I've gotten a taste of the summer festival season, & it has left me wanting more I expect to be at Boonville and OFFF in September and then our local festival in Redway in October. Fun-ski! Hope to see you at one or more of those events!!

Sit 'n' Knit at Crafty Mavericks

I can prove at least that my knitting bag was at Sunday's Sit 'n' Knit at the Crafty Mavericks Handmade & Vintage Spring Show at the Bayside Grange. I was busy snapping pics & getting an impromptu crochet lesson from Paula, so this photo is the only evidence I have that I was there. There was an outside shot that this week's 'episode' of the Arcata Eye was going to feature a pic of brightly-clad me, as Terence McNally was there photodocumenting our knitterly & crotchet-erly goings on, but I checked today, & they left out the pics of us over on the couches. :(

I actually did a pretty-piss poor job of papparazzi-ing mysel. This shot of Rachelle is the only other people pic I captured, despite Sunni and Paula both being there too.

I did get a couple of shots over in the YARN-Chicken Boots booth, though. Look how cute the new fabric Chicken Boots sign is - Saremy printed it out on her her computer!

She (wo)manned the booth while demo-ing one of her wristlet bags, perfect for holding your small WIP while glad-handing customers and other show-goers.

In addition to the wristlets, Saremy had lots of needle cases, project bags, & pocket buckets on offer too.

And Sunni brought her line of handmade jewelry, as well as a few hand-knit pieces and several of her upcycled shawl-ponchos (shawnchos? pawls?) made from thrifted sweaters. Find her creations at YARN-Shipwreck in Eureka, CA. Thanks to YARN for hosting the Sit 'n' Knit on the road!

One last crafty seller photo - this is my friend Malia of Do Over! on Etsy. She makes monster plushies, among other things, and SHE got her photo in the Arcata Eye this week instead of me, but how could she not? She was the cutest one there! I'm excited for her because she is going to Greece for a month as an artist model. Go, Malia!

And this is just a photo I snapped on my ride home from the craft show - Day 115 of 2010: A Year in Pictures! Still keeping up with that project, but some days: just barely.

I'll leave you with this, what I wore to the show: I am "Color Can't Hurt You!"-incarnate! If you didn't know, that's my company motto for COLORBOMB Creations. I'm sporting 'All Het Up', a skein of my Bobblesque handspun art yarn. It's a bunch of HOT pink supercoils in a nest of beehives. LOVE! Who says yarn can't be jewelry?

Pie & Poetry

I don't get out much these days, but I made sure to hit Northtown Books in Arcata last night for Pie & Poetry! They threw the culinary/composition combo in honor of National Poetry Month, & it would have been a hit even without the complimentary gin & tonics!

The poetry half of the evening was provided by Jacqueline Suskin of the Poem Store. With her vintage Royal portable, complete with a 'Your Subject, Your Price' sign, Jacqueline creates impromptu poetry on demand. Here's the yarn-themed bit she 'penned' for me:

-yarn

We take our time with the weaving
of our ways, picking our paths
as bits of straw from wool, with care
and all senses alight. But to settle on
the actual weave is to cut past all
the go between and make motion our debt
to the cycle of all things. From sheep
back to our back, the warmth of connection
becomes craft and the purpose of spinning
is clear as our spot of time on this
ongoing line of again & again.
~Jacqueline Suskin April 24th, 2010

You can catch Jacqueline pecking out poems all season on the Arcata Plaza at Farmers Market, or commission one at the Poem Store online. Oh, and listen to KRFH, Radio Free Humboldt, if you get it - not only are they award-winners, but the reporter they sent to cover P&P had me read 'my' poem for the presentation they are planning to air during one of their Saturday shows.

As for the pie, Monika and Sarah really outdid themselves! Monika's Double Cherry was my favorite, but the surprise of the evening was Sarah's delightful Avacado Chiffon, which blew me away. I tried it for the novelty factor, but what brought me back for seconds was the clean, citrusy goodness that melted on my tongue. When they get their Pie Truck idea up and running, you can BET I'll be a regular customer!

Finally, let me give you my Craft or Bust! Week 16 roundup:

Handmade Nation = INSPIRATION!

Last night I hopped in the car with Kristy of Hands on CRAFT & puttered the 8 miles to the Accident Gallery in Eureka to view a screening of the crafty documentary Handmade Nation. And how lucky that we got to see the indie DIY film before Portland, where it is headed next, got it! As if the fact that there was beer available wasn't enough, on top of that OUR screening was presented GRATIS, as opposed to the 10 clams folks have to cough up to see it elsewhere. Who do we have to thank for our good fortune? Garth Johnson of Extreme Craft and the Clay Club of College of the Redwoods, that's who.

If you haven't heard about it yet, HN is the brainchild of Faythe Levine of Art vs. Craft fame, who traveled over 19,000 miles to interview 80 artists in their habitat: craft fairs, studios, galleries, & boutiques. Some of the biggest names are featured from crafting traditions as diverse as embroidery, print-making, knit-tagging, & lampwork.

What did I think of the movie? I adored it! What better way to get inspired & motivated to make shit than to see others talking about their adventures in the DIY world. Highlights for me were the braille embroidery work being done by Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching; Whitney Lee's Soft Porn, a latch-hook rug of a Playboy reclining nude; and the cowgirl clothes adorned with embroidered ASL alphabets (sorry, couldn't track down the artist's name). Only thing I think it lacked was YARN!!

Watch the trailer, then get in your car & find the nearest screening. See if Handmade Nation is comin' to your town by checking out their blog for details.

Quick! Get to the Etsy Virtual Labs!

Last-minute, I know, but I'm excited: one of my yarns is slated to be a pick by Extreme Craft genius Garth Johnson in his Shop Live event in the Treehouse at Etsy Virtual Labs today! It's at 1pmPST/4pmEST, and it will be my first experience participating in a Shop Live workshop, let alone being *featured* in one! Giving a wee shout-out to his wife's Etsy shop, joyceclaire; she makes cutie-patootie baby bonnets & other infant sartorial items. Wanna see Garth's picks from the last time he was the featured buyer? Check out the Spotlight article in The Storque. My favorite? The kitty catnip tampons from theshancan. ;) Or maybe Tonyarose's false teeth ring. You get the gist. See you in the Treehouse!

What a Weekend!

Such a great weekend I had, how about you? Started out Friday night with my first visit to the Firiday Night Free-for-All at my LYS Handmade Memories. Janice stays open 'til midnight once a month for a knit- and crochet-in, and besides Bea, Eileen and me there were about 10 other women there. While there, I took advantage of the knowledge base, and Janice taught me how to crochet! I've been wanting to learn forever, so I can make stuff like this, and this. So while I'm not there yet, I did manage to make this wee bonnet for the Knitted Babe I'm making Sophie for Christmas. Sure it would look better on a smaller head, but you get the general idea, right? This hat will be the first piece of clothing in what promises to be a wardrobe fit for a queen; I've sent my request to join the KAL and am waiting to be sent an invite.

I also finished up 2 WIPs, this Xmas scarf for myself in handspun yarn "Land of the Bubble King" from Jenny Neutron Star, and the watchap my friend Jeff commissioned from me, done in Manos del Urugauy. It was fun doing the scarf, as it was knit up on US35 needles and went lightning-quick, plus I hadn't knit a scarf in a couple of years. Quickies are nice sometimes. ;)

Oh, and locals, Handmade Memories has some good in-store deals: for frequent flyers there's a discount card, and if you visit the store in costume on Halloween, Janice will take 10% off your puchase! She's got some new Debbie Bliss Pure Silk and the book Not Your Mama's Knitting by Heather Dixon, 2 of my Lust-For Things, so I'm thinking about doing it.

Saturday, after a Los Bagels breakfast (best combo bagelry/Jewish bakery anywhere, I'd wager), I headed south with Eileen and Sophie to Redway and the annual Natural Fiber Fair at the Mateel Community Center. Although I didn't find the right drum carder like I'd hoped, boy did I score in the fiber department! Check out the pics of what I got: yak, camel & alpaca from Herndon Creek Farm; Cormo/silk waste and mill ends from Aunt Janet's Fiber Mill; silk hankies from Chasing Rainbows Dyeworks; and mohair locks and angora from Nebo Rock Textiles. Like the dork I am, I got so caught up in shopping before 3yo Sophie ran out of steam and sent us packing that I didn't think to pull the camera out of my bag and snap a few photos of the displays. Doh! Although I noticed that the trend of snarky fiberistas extends beyond the brick-and-mortar shops to fiber fests too (one seller had all her fiber bagged and refused to open one so that I could touch it before buying; that's like buying a peach without holding it to see if it is ripe, in my book), I found Nancy Finn at Chasing Rainbows to be the epitome of a gracious seller. She gave me a little demo on spinning silk hankies on a drop-spindle, right in her booth. And both Marie (the fiber side of the biz) and Jim (the woodworker) Pritchard of Herndon Creek Farm were lovely to me. Jim helped me evaluate the 2 drum carders on offer at the used equipment booth (almost bought the Strauch double-wide, but I dislike the seller so much I'd rather pay full retail than save the 2 C-notes of her price). He even went so far as to show me how his lazy kates could be easily fabricated by my carpenter boyfriend. If you are in the market for a beautifully handcrafted, handturned nostepinde, yarn gauge, or orifice hook, look no further than the ones Jim makes from exotic woods. Going to this festival gave me a taste of what Eileen and I will find at Rhinebeck next year (this year is out, sadly, as I have one last seminar to attend for my graduate program); we are planning on going in 2007, come hell or high water.

Sunday was a lazy day; I hung out on the couch most all day, watching t.v. and working on this attempt at crocheting a hat (what the hell is up with the ruffling along the side?? And now I can't get it to "tube" down from the crown into sides; I'm stumped). Cole puttered in the garage making me a frame for an earring rack (similar to this one); he'll be finishing it tonight and I'll post a picture of it tomorrow, natch.

Ooh, want to share a spankin' new blog with you: Stuff & Things is the brainchild (or red-headed step-child, you decide) of my friend and frequent commenter Rebecca, aka OneTwistedKitty. She hasn't posted much yet, but the photostream she posted is ethereal and beautiful, so go check it out and pester her to write more. Thanks, R, for joining me in the blogosphere!
