Gettin' My Silky On

Feeling silk-tastic! My bamboo handspun shawl has put me in the mood for some lustrous, drapey fiber action, & the hand-dyed Mulberry silk sliver I dyed last week is just the ticket! I put 5 colorways of my handpainted Pigtails™ into the COLORBOMB Creations Etsy shop for your spinning pleasure. Pictured above is the pinkiest-pink colorway 'Speak Softly', and the Etsy listing can be found HERE.

COLORBOMB Pigtails™ (Rav link) are daisy-chain braids of roving (carded) or top (combed), hand-dyed using professional acid or fiber reactive dyes in fun color combos & semi-solids. These particular silk braids are 100% Bombyx (aka Mulberry) silk combed sliver/top, and the colorway above, inspired by Monet's painting of the same name, is called 'Bridge at Giverny' and can be found in the shop HERE.

Mulberry silk fiber is the highest quality available, made by Bombyx mori silkworms. The luminosity is stunning in this fiber, and when spun it creates a shine that is unparalleled. It is also the strongest natural fiber available, making your spun yarn extremely durable. Mulberry silk is hypoallergenic and odorless, unlike it's wild counterpart, and will not felt. Each of these braids is 2 ounces of silky goodness, with a staple length of approximately 3 inches. My colorways are OOAK & non-repeatable - be sure to grab yours while you can! Craft or Bust Week 12

Today finds us at the close of the 3rd month of Craft or Bust. Can you believe it? That's a whole quarter of crafting, with absolutely zero busting!

This week was almost exclusively about spinning yarn, in terms of crafty pursuits. Lots & lots o' art yarn!!

The weather all week ('til today) was sheer awesomeness, so I spent a good part of it doing my spinning outside in the backyard. There's not much nicer on a Saturday afternoon than sitting at the wheel amongst the daisies, letting wool pass between your fingers & listening to the chickadees in the Hawthorne tree. Look, I'll show you!

The Handspun Love Continues

Yes! MORE art yarn! I'm finally spinning again. I listed two, count 'em, two skeins in my Etsy shop today. This one here is called 'Melon Baller', 'cuz that makes me giggle uncontrollably. Tee hee! It is one of my Enwraptured™-style yarns, wreathed in myriad threads &, in this case, the secret ingredient: banana silk!

The closeup gives a good view of all the goodies packed into this singles, super-bulky yarn: locks of the Cotswold, BFL, Wensleydale, & Leicester variety; more wool, including Romney, Rambouillet, & Corriedale; cotton quilting fabric scraps; upcycled threads; and the aforementioned banana fiber. That last is a form of rayon, & adds the soft & silky look & feel that you KNOW you love! This is one texture-y good yarn! And it's listed HERE.

I also listed a new skein of 'Denim Shmenim', the blue shade of my Shaganator™ yarn like 'In the Buff' and 'Green Man' you saw the other day. It's jeans-inspired color palette would coordinate with anything, just like your favorite pair of dungarees! And this baby is jammed with more upcycled yarn scraps than you can shake a spindle at. The whole shebang is plied with a single strand of navy wool yarn to sturdy-ify the skein. Fun! Wanna see a closeup? I know you do!

Hand-dyed by me using professional acid dyes in the colorway SALMON SALAD! A mix of pinks & oranges with a bit of green for contrast. Coopworth characteristics are similar to Lincoln, but this is the softest I've run across, & the staple length is giant: 9 inches! Possesses a silky, spiral-type crimp, this wool should be an easy spin for beginners. Would also be great to felt with or use in other crafty projects. Get 'em here.

More LooseyGoosey! 'Billy Connelly', named after the blue comedian who sometimes wears a purple beard, is loose 100% Cotswold wool from a sheep named 'Amelia'. She also lives on a rescue ranch in Wisconsin, I dyed her wool a mix of azure blue & royal purple. If you haven't tried it, Cotswold characteristics are similar to Mohair, a long and lustrous fiber with a long, curly lock. Very strong!

Last of the loose fibers, but certainly not least, is Baby Doll Southdown LooseyGoosey wool, my 'Punch & Judy' colorway, from Trevor, another rescue sheep. Squoooooshy fiber in mostly pinks and oranges, with a bit of purple & lime green thrown in for good measure. Not familiar with the Babydoll breed? It is a fine wool breed & a miniature sheep as well. Characteristics include a springy, undefined short-staple (approx. 1.5-2.5 inches) with lots of crimp. Exceptional for spinning, producing a 'bouncy' yarn. Also excellent to felt with or use in other crafty projects.

Finally, I realized I never blogged about 'Hickory Horned Devils' Pigtails™ - in the shop long enough to sell some, but not all of these delectable braids of Rambouillet-Merino-Targhee blend combed wool top. This is one of THE most soft, squooshy, simply DECADENT fiber blends I've run across! All 3 of the wools that comprise this blend are next-to-skin soft, super-fine & crimpy. Rambouillet adds long-staple characteristics while Targhee provides the 'spring' that makes this fiber perfect for a lofty, airy yarn. A great choice for a thick-and-thin yarn! Go, Team, GO!

Didja hear the news? I'm captaining a team for the Ravelympics & I want YOU! I also put up this NEW skein of handspun art yarn in the shop, 'Spruced Up', one of my Tufty™ style yarns with tufts of fiber wrapped like little presents of love and sprinkled throughout.

It's a whopping 132 yards of snow-on-evergreen goodness, in undyed BFL wool with silky green hand-dyed mohair locks from my friend Janet Heppler's Nebo-Rock Textiles in Covelo, CA, plied in with a coordinating cotton thread. Weighing in at almost a quarter-pound, I daresay there should be plenty enough for a hat or other small project, even a pair of matching kids hats!

This last pic I'm throwing in 'cuz it makes me giggle: this is my Day 26 Year in Pictures entry from yesterday, entitled 'Busy Week at the Bomb Squad.' Seems bomb threat #2 of the week wasn't any more threatening than the first one (which turned out to be a bicycle light, not a bomb). Maybe this chin-stroking Humboldt's finest is contemplating what this one will eventually prove to be?

Three Kinds of Stashing

This post was meant to go up yesterday, but fuck it, I had a rough day. Up early on a Saturday morning to do some dyeing, so I may as well write a blog post while the silk soaks, eh?

Thursday night was the monthly spin-in night hosted by my fiber guild. I've only been once before, & was expecting a better turnout (there were 3 of us, plus the hostess). The upside was that it was hosted at the new Eureka Fabrics location, where I got my fill of fabric fondling for the week. And I splurged (only $7.99 a yard!) on 2 3/8 yards of this gorgeous African wax print cotton from Côte d'Ivoire to make a skirt (read about the history of these fabrics here and about the wax-resist dyeing process here.) Rima also has stunning hand-stitched fabrics from India, gorgeous silks, organic hemp, sewing & quilting classes, and garments hand-made by Sister Crow.

And this is the haul from my day spent toiling at my LYS, hands on CRAFT, yesterday: 10 skeins of Pure Silk by Debbie Bliss. If I were the go-to marketing genius there, I'd be calling it 'Pure Bliss', but then I'm a hyperbolic kind of chick. 100% silk singles, in a red reminiscent of a pomegranate. I'm thinking of knitting a t-shirt with it; maybe the Cap Sleeved Top written specifically for this yarn? (Rav link)

Finally, I dyed 'Goth Plunge', a poofy, soft Rambo-Merino-Targhee blend roving this past week, & am just now getting it into the shop. It delights me! There are 4 braids available, but I'll tell ya a secret: I just might hoard one for myself!

My Pretty Pigtails

New Pigtails(tm), added to the Etsy shop today! These are called 'My Pretty Pony' (thanks, Knitch, for the name!!)

There are 4 total available: 1 each of the top & middle pics & 2 of the darker, bottom photo. Each is approx. 4ounces of Blue Faced Leicester (BFL) loveliness. Don't know about BFL? Boy, are you in for a treat! Soft like merino but with a longer staple length (~4-6inches), it is an easy spin for both beginners & experienced spinners alike.

All four of these braids came out of the same dyepot, but they vary from light to intense saturation as a result of my "patented" (LOL) technique. They'd look great mixed together!

Meant to get pics of the other braids I dyed this week, but I feel like crap (allergies, I hope) & I had zero luck capturing the yellow/green combo accurately. Maybe tomorrow...

It's Friday, That Must Mean FIBER!

Oh, yeah, it is Fiber Friday! This week, that means another SHOP UPDATE, woohoo! This time, we're rockin' the BAMBOO!

These lovelies are my most recent batch of Pigtails, daisy-chain braids of roving/top hand-dyed by me using professional dyes in hot colorways, cooked up in the recesses of my crazy brain. They all went into the COLORBOMB Creations shop on Etsy yesterday, & most of them are still available for you spinning fools ready to give bamboo a try.

What's so good about bamboo? Let me tell ya! Bamboo has an exceptional silky sheen, exhibits natural anti-microbial/
anti-bacterial properties, is touted as having environmentally friendly characteristics due to being made from a renewable resource that needs no irrigation, pesticides, or herbicides, & is an absolute dream to spin. (I've had some people tell me they find bamboo to be a bit 'jerky' - try using a lighter touch when you're drafting, & that should clear right up!)

My put-ups for bamboo are approx. 4oz (120g) each, so you'll have plenty to make a nice project.

Got Milk (Fiber)?

Finally, a shop update! Woot, woot! Yep, reader, yesterday I added 8 new colorways of milk protein top to the COLORBOMB Creations shop on Etsy. And you're lookin' at 'em right now!

Milk fiber? What's milk fiber?, you might be asking yourself. It's one of the hot new spinning fibers on the market today. Lemme tell you a bit about what you can expect when spinning COLORBOMB milk top.

First, I handpaint 100% milk protein (also known as 'casein') combed top using professional dyes in the most spectacular colorways I can think of. After carefully setting the dyes so you won't experience any of those pesky bleeding problems sometimes the hallmark of hand-dyed fibers, I put the top up in daisy-chain braids that I call Pigtails™, which are easy to undo & spin directly from on either a wheel or spindle. For milk Pigtails™, the put-up are in 2oz. (60g.) increments to give you an opportunity to try a bit before committing to a larger quantity, & to keep the price affordable for all.

Now, a bit about the characteristics of milk fiber. Exceptionally soft & stronger than wool, milk fiber exhibits anti-microbial/anti-bacterial properties & wicks moisture, making it a great choice for socks & underwear, & because it has the same pH as human skin, it is great for sensitive skin - like babies! It is an absolute dream to spin, very easy even for beginners, with a long (~5"/13cm) staple with a gentle wave to it. Give it a try, I'm sure you'll love it!

New Fibers in the SHOP!

I know I've been REALLY bad about posting when I update the shop, but I'm trying to be better, I swear on my favorite pants I am! Here's what we've got on deck. Two new product lines: Pigtails™ roving/top braids (above) and Lox Populi, Locks for the People™ (below)!!

These are some of the fruits of my recent hand-dyeing labors, and I've just gotta say, I really wish I could hang on to ALL these and create some fab new yarns. But my loss is your gain! The locks are all mohair, dyed in scrumptious colors with professional acid dyes, they are silky and shiny, without a doubt. They're going fast, so if you are interested, better jump quick!

The top 2 braids are Coopworth carded roving (both are gone already, sorry!), and the bottom 2 are Wensleydale combed top. Wensleydale is known for it's long staple & crimp, translating into an easy spin that yields a strong & lustrous yarn. A personal fave of mine, it reminds me of spinning mohair.

'Nicked Shaving' is Scrappy Goodness!

It's Wednesday, boys and girls, so let's see what's on my bobbin! Mmmm, scrappy goodness, that's what. I've been working (slowly, been feeling very lazy ass for awhile) on a (S)craptastic style yarn - and it's done!

"What the hell is a (S)craptastic yarn, Velma?" Glad you asked, reader! (S)craptastic yarns are one of my Greenish products, made of 100% repurposed and reclaimed materials. In this case, it is naturally-colored gray Shetland wool that I bartered for (go, green!), filled with loads of yarn scraps all in RED in honor of the Valentine's crafting season. When I plied it, I threw in tons of beehives, coils, and stacks for added visual & tactile stimulation. Here's the pertinent details:

Thursday Mashup

I'm all over the place today, like a schizophrenic with ADD, and I thought I'd share the experience. A little something from yesterday, a smattering of Tuesday crap, maybe a peek into the future even. Oh, and some knitting!


Shop Update: 3 new handspun art yarns up on Etsy today! Two new WoolyBear yarns: 'Dirt Nap' and 'Have a Heart'. The former is 42 yards of chocolate-brown Jacob wool, and the latter is the Cormo/merino blend spun up in yesterday's video. They're really gonzo on texture, and I think they'll make someone (or someones) very happy. The 3rd is a frequently-requested skein of SUPERCOILS! Yep, a new LoopyDoopy - this one is one of the 'Minis', smaller gauge (as in about 5-7WPI; no sock yarn here!). It's called 'Forget Me Not', and it's pastel merino - robin's egg blue, lavender, pale pink, dove gray... Gotta give a shout out to velvetpurrs for providing a great colorway name, and to J.Hayworth, hatdiva2, Lar'Zaina, deanno, and thnomad for their great suggestions! Sometimes the well of creativity just comes up dry, so it's good to know that you all have my back.

Lookee! Lookee what I got in the mail a few days ago! A bunch of bitchin' vintage embroidery transfers! My Flickr friend Xao_T saw my blog post about returning to embroidery after 20+ years, and remembered she had some old patterns lying around, and offered to send them to me; what a sweetie!

There are some really off-the-wall images in this collection, as well as some very traditional 50s cutesy icons (my fave!). There's another baggie filled with more animal images (a goat!) not even pictured here. Not sure which is gonna show up in my workbasket first, although I'm leaning toward a kitty playing with yarn, chinese lanterns, or this weird ghost figure in the Leisure Arts book. Whatever gets picked, it'll be a doozy! Thanks, Xao!


Here's a couple of pics of the hub & I riding into town yesterday to pay a visit the recycling center & local thrift stores, which we were combing to find me a vintage Rolodex rotary card file. Saw a really cute one from fellow Team EcoEtsy member EcoMonster on Etsy yesterday, complete with cards & dividers crafted from recycled papers, but at 75 clams, I figure I'll bite the DIY bullet and make my own. Found one, but it was all plastick-y (bleh), and $5, so I'm holding out for a better-slash-cheaper one. Got the Hub on the lookout for one at the pawn shop. (He's off in search of tracing paper for my embroidery pleasure, as we speak. Such a good Hub!)

Lastly (finally!) here's a pic of my current knitting project on the needles: my Stoner Jaywalker socks. I finished sock #1 well before Christmas, but set them aside to concentrate on gift knitting. I picked 'em back up on New Year's day, happy to be wallowing in some selfish knitting again. This is my first exposure to the virus known as "second sock syndrome" - can't wait to get these off the needles and move the fuck ON!

Holiday Craftacular!

Anybody else go to the Holiday Craft Market today? It was the 9th Annual, apparently, and it turns out I knew 5 of the vendors! I was there, not to shop (no $ this year for xmas prizers or decorations), but to fondle my yarn.

Thursday I blogged about Hands on CRAFT, Arcata's new 'center for manual arts' and the newest retailer of COLORBOMB yarns; today I checked out Kristy's booth, full of some of the crafting supplies she's going to have at Hands on CRAFT, including my yarns. That's Kristy on the left, introducing my yarns to a market-goer.

She had a lovely booth, and it was a great way to introduce the new venture. She's opening this Tuesday - go say 'hi' and tell her Velma sent you.

Among the other booths were a few gems that I've gotta give a shout-out to; hi to Diane at Sweet Heat Habanero Jams; Candy and her polymer clay jewelry (she's going to make me a custom be-Hallowigged Velma pin!); Jbird Glass (Cole says, 'hi', Jbird); and Marian of Tegas - check out her beautiful tile art if you're in the market for a special something. And I was surprised to find not one but TWO new sources of fiber: alpaca from Fortuna and merino/southdown in Westhaven. Now that's a successful craft market!

After all that, I even found time to list a new skein of handspun on Etsy (luckily, I took the pics before I left for the craft market; it was dark and wet when I returned, no light for photography, that's for sure). Called 'Ruddy Duddy', it looks like this:

As L&V Say: 'Squeee!'

I finally updated my COLORBOMB Creations shop on Etsy yesterday, and sent out my very *first* official shop update email to my growing list of fans, and was instantly rewarded this morning when I discovered that in addition to several sales, I had been featured on the Lime & Violet blog Daily Chum as their ESotD (read: featured Etsy crack yarn sellers)! How cool is that?!? You can read their writeup of me and my yarns/fibers here.

What's New with COLORBOMB Handspun

I haven't done a shop update here on the blog for awhile, despite adding new items to my Etsy shop every week. Thought it was about damn time I did! Also want to give a heads up to any spinners reading this, letting you know that I'm increasing my offering of fiber and spinning supplies.

Been getting *loads* of "press" via the Etsy Treasuries. My yarns and fibers have been featured in ELEVEN in the last week alone! This is one of my favorites, and features one of my BOMBatts, 'Peach Melba'. There's still one left, spinners, if you are looking!

I've started making fiber art adornment (read: jewelry), too. I'm calling them 'Neck Baubles'. :) I made some felty beads that look like flowers to me, and strung them on tigertail to make a choker. It turned out so cute! In the shop HERE.

Wore it once to see how it performed, and got rave reviews, from fiber folks no less (I wore it to the tiny animal & fiber show down at the Ferndale Fairgrounds this past Saturday. Also picked up a bit of fiber and a new contact. Whee!) There's another shot of it HERE, just the necklace, if you're interested.

Finally, I'll share a yarn I made and am hoarding, all for myself. I call it 'Easter Bunny on Acid', and it's a Lockalicious™ yarn. The locks are Cotswald, from The Speckled Ram, just like the locks used in the 2 yarns above. I can't say enough good things about Pepper and her fibers; superb customer service, quick delivery, and an excellent product. Get over to her shop and get you some!!
